Life and work
Fik Meijer was Professor of Ancient History at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in naval history. Together with Marius West he has translated Josephus Flavius’s Antiquities of the Jews and The Jewish War into Dutch. He is also the author of A Sideways Look at Antiquity, St. Paul’s Voyage to Rome, Emperors Don’t Die in Bed and Gladiators.
Gladiatoren
Ancient Rome may have had an impressive culture and architecture, but it was here that the cruellest - and immensely popular - spectacles were organised: gladiator fights. Many historians have condemned such excessive cruelty, but have been unable to explain it. Fik Meijer places the shows in their historical context, showing how man-to-man fighting persisted in Europe for centuries and how animal fights have retained their popularity into modern times.
Keizers sterven niet in bed
Meijer has in his book recorded the emperors of Rome in 500 years and he shows us why these emperors died. He also takes us to see their politic and normal life. From this book we know that struggling for the royal power is always an object that people talk.
