As a follow-up to the host country programme 'Open landscape – Open book', which was successfully completed in September 2011, the Dutch Foundation for Literature is again organizing a series of literature events on the occasion of the Beijing International Book Fair 2012 (BIBF). Various Dutch-language and Chinese authors and moderators will be taking part in the programme, which will be held from 28 August to 2 September in book shops and arts centers throughout Beijing. At the BIBF, attention will also be paid to Dutch-language literature. At a joint stand, the Dutch Foundation for Literature and the Flemish Foundation for Literature will be presenting new Dutch and Flemish titles to Chinese publishers. The stand also offers space to Dutch and Flemish publishers.

Matthijs-van-Boxel

Giant Leap 1 - The importance of being stupid

29 August 2012 - 7.00 pm – UCCA, Le Café
According to literary historian Matthijs van Boxsel, no one is intelligent enough to understand his or her own stupidity. In The encyclopedia of stupidity he shows how stupidity manifests itself in all areas, in everyone, at all times: stupidity is the foundation of our civilization.
Van Boxsel takes stupidity seriously, as did Robert Musil, unlike Gustave Flaubert, who used satire and irony as weapons against stupidity. Van Boxsel puts forward the provocative premise that stupidity is a condition for intelligence, that blunders stimulate progress, that failure is the basis for success. Van Boxsel will give a lecture and discuss the subject of stupidity with the Chinese pataphysicians Zhang Chi and A Jian.

Who is Matthijs van Boxsel?

Literary historian Matthijs van Boxsel (b. 1957) has been studying the topic of stupidity since 1980. In 1999 he published The Encyclopedia of Stupidity, which was nominated for the prestigious Generale Bank Prize for Literature. In 2001 the sequel Morosophy appeared, studying the 100 stupidest Dutch theories of the 20th century. This was followed in 2006 by a volume on stupidity as an art of living: Expertology or the Art of Stupidity. Van Boxsel is now working on The Topography of Stupidity, in which he gathers all the cities and regions that are proverbially known for stupidity. The Encyclopedia of Stupidity has already been translated into 17 languages, and has recently been published in China by Shanghai Literature and Arts Publishing.

Floris Cohen

Giant Leap 2 - How modern science came to the world

30 August 2012 - 7.00 pm – UCCA, Le Café
Why did modern science originate in Europe, and why was there no Chinese Newton or Arab Galileo? Thinking about the natural world reached great heights in the civilizations of ancient Greece, China, and medieval Islam, but eventually decline set in. Floris Cohen argues that historians should try to explain why stagnation did not occur in seventeenth-century Europe rather than asking why it did in the earlier civilizations. A discussion on the emergence and progress of science with historian Floris Cohen and writer and critic Kang Kai.

Who is Floris Cohen?

Floris Cohen is professor of the comparative history of science at the University of Utrecht. He is regarded the world over as one of the foremost authorities on the emergence of modern science in seventeenth-century Europe. He is the author of How Modern Science Came Into the World, which won him the 2008 Eureka Prize for the best science book aimed at a broad readership. A Chinese edition of How Modern Science Came Into the World has recently been published by Hunan Science and Technology Press.

Stella Braam

Giant Leap 3 - When the mind breaks down

31 August 2012 - 7.00 pm – UCCA, Le Café
What does it mean to realize that you are slowly losing grip on yourself and on reality? And how does society react? In 2003 Stella Braam’s father, former psychologist René van der Neer, was told he had Alzheimer’s disease. His daughter spent the next two years with him, documenting his life with all its ups and downs in a much talked about book: I have Alzheimer's. ‘A diagnosis of dementia is a license to deprive a person of all his civil rights', according to Van der Neer. The book made waves in Dutch society, earning its author the title of 'Alzheimer activist'. Stella Braam will discuss her book and speak about the situation of Alzheimer patients in the Netherlands and China with writer Bi Shumin.

Who is Stella Braam?

Stella Braam (1962) is a well-known journalist who reports on current affairs, both social and political. As an undercover journalist she reported on her experiences in low-wage jobs and investigated the illegal activities of the extreme right Turkish organization Grey Wolves. The publication of the latter book resulted in death threats forcing the author to go into hiding for several weeks. In Among Idiots and Lowlifes, Braam researched the seamy side of Dutch society, claiming that ‘to know the scene, you have to be part of it’. In 2005 she published I have Alzheimer’s, which was recently translated into Chinese (Flower City Publishing House).
